The good thing about being pregnant is my ability to eat, and eat, and eat.. After a relaxing bank holiday weekend away in Yorkshire, three hours into our journey I was so hungry that I insisted we made an emergency stop for food. Using Mr D’s new squaremeal app (clever thing it finds a pub/restaurant close to your location) we stumbled upon the outstanding Sir Charles Napier..
Set aside from the rolling Chiltern hills, this pub offers a swoon-worthy mix of pictures and garden sculptures, with cosy log fires adding to its charm. Immediately welcomed by friendly licensee and owner Julie Griffiths, and smoothing out any post M1 drive ruffles with a delicious full bodied Red for Mr D, and a ’Virgin’ Mary for me, we slipped into comfy chairs and started to explore the menu.
The menu follows the seasons, using fresh, local produce. Mr D opts for the asparagus, along with hollandaise, which arrives topped with a dainty poached egg. He follows with an oh-so-succulant lamb stew.. Dreamy. My cheese and smoked haddock souffle was positively divine.. followed by mushroom pasta, which was excellent and I could well have greedily devoured another portion. By the time our cheese and treacle tart had arrived (we couldn’t resist) we have decided that we loved this place – it was a definite favourite, with old-school charms, slow-paced luxury and excellently prepared, beautifully presented food. Having recently been given a michelin star, it is indeed worthy, with affordable five-star sophistication in the heart of the countryside, yet only 40 minutes outside of London. We’ll be back soon…
